ENGLISH:
Nyctelia dorsata, one of the largest Nyctelia, a Nycteliini
group from the South of South America. This genus is found
between Santiago and Tierra del Fuego, in Magallanes. There
are many species, several of them live in both Chile and
Argentina. The best place to collect them is in Patagonia,
where they come out early in the morning, hiding later from
the sunlight, burying in the sand or soil. Larvae are
unknown although we are rearing some species within a
Project with Dr Gustavo Flores from Mendoza, Argentina. The
best way to collect them is to go out in the fields with
children, as seen in the photo below, where Francisca and
Camila found some in Patagonia last year during a trip with
Argentinian Entomologist Daniel Rojas
Lanus.
ESPAÑOL: Miembros de
este género se encuentran entre Santiago y Tierra del
Fuego en Magallanes. Son varias especies que viven en Chile
o Argentina. Son grandes coleópteros de gruesa capa
quitinosa. En la Patagonia se ven salir temprano en la
mañana y se esconden y entierran en arena en la
tarde. Sus larvas eran desconocidas pero se están
estudiando como parte de un proyecto con el Dr G Flores de
Mendoza, Argentina. La foto de abajo muestra a mi hijas
colectando Nyctelia en un viaje reciente a la Patagonia con
Daniel Rojas Lanús, Naturalista de Trellew, Patagonia
Argentina.
