Gyriosomus. They are called by some local people "Vaquitas
del Desierto", not sure if induced by entomologists to have
a vernacular name. It is found from Atacama and Coquimbo,
when every spring anybody can see them. From time to time
rains a few drops in the desert winter, then during the
following spring the Desert blossoms and the fields get
covered in beautiful flowers. This is the time when millions
Gyriosomus come out. This is the time when I have seen my
children scream of happiness. These specimen are seen
copulating in a green Atacama desert, in October. ESPAÑOL:
Se encuentra en Atacama en la franja costera, y muchos se
ven en cada primavera. Cada tantos años un poco de
agua cae en el desierto, y se produce un fenómeno
espectacular llamado "Desierto Florido". Ahi muchos miles de
Gyriosomus eclosan y se ven deambulando. En esta
situación he visto a mis niños gritar de
emoción y felicidad. Este especimen hembra esta
fotografiado en el Desierto de Atacama florido, en Octubre.
Su ciclo biológico está en estudio y
recién comienza a desenmascararse.
