Geoborus costatus: This is one of two species in this genus
of Epitragini. It is found from the Atacama Desert to the
central areas of Chile, both in the Andes and near the
Pacific coast. It is a common visitor of many desert
flowers, that make its jet black body yellow due to the
pollen cover. It is a fast flyer. The areas where it live in
the Atacama and Coquimbo areas get covered by blossoms every
few years when it rains, at this time many, many specimens
can be collected. Absolutely nothing is known from its
larvae or life cycle. ESPAÑOL:
Esta especie es una de dos en el genero. Se encuentra desde
el Desierto de Atacama hasta Chile Central, en la costa y
precordillera. Es un visitante comun de las flores del
desierto y a veces se las ve cubierto de polen de las flores
que polinizan. Vuelan rapido y ruidosamente. Su ciclo
biologico es desconocido. Cada tantos años llueve en
el Desierto y se produce un fenomeno espectacular llamado
Desierto Florido. En esta situacion se pueden encontrar
muchos ejemplares.
