
ENGLISH:
Chiasognathus grantii is called by the locals "Ciervo
Volante". Is a very, very common Lucanid in both Chile and
Argentina. It is also the prettiest and largest chilean
Lucanidae. Its larvae live buried in the soil under rotting
logs. Specimens can reach 9 cms easily. There are several
species within the genus. There are years when thousands of
specimens can be seen flying during the hot hours.
ESPAÑOL:
El llamado Ciervo Volante es el Lucanido mas bello y de
mayor tamaño en el pais. Vive en Chile y Argentina,
entre Talca y Aysen. Es muy comun, y en ciertos años
se ven muchos miles de ejemplares volando a la hora de
calor. Sus larvas viven en el suelo, bajo troncos podridos.
Tipicamente asociado a bosques de Nothofaguas.
