ENGLISH:
Cheloderus childreni : This is the most spectacular chilean
beetle. Measures up to 45 mm.
It lives in the central Valdivian-type
forest, developing in live logs of Nothofagus dombeyii, a
large Fagaceae tree. It it fairly common and males are
easily seen flying during hot days in summer time, very high
in the canopy. The females, one shown here are more coloured
than males, lay their eggs on the trees bark where minute
larvae start boring into the centre of the tree. The tree
usually survives their attack. It can be found between Talca
and Osorno. Local people call it "Coleoptero de la Luma".

Cheloderus childreni Esta es la especie mas bella de
escarabajo chileno. Mide hasta 45 mm. Vive en el bosque
valdiviano, y la larva de desarrolla en troncos vivos de
Coigue, Nothofagus dombeyii. Es una especie común y
los machos se ven volando a la hora de calor veraniego. Las
hembras, como la que se muestra ponen sus huevos sobre la
corteza del arbol desde la que penetran las larvas. El
árbol generalmente resiste el ataque y sobrevive sin
problemas. Se encuentra entre Talca y Osorno y los
lugareños lo llaman Coleóptero de la
Luma.
