ENGLISH: CHILE is an extremely long
and narrow country, oriented in a North-South axis along the
Western coast of South America, between 17 and 56 S
latitude. The East is separated from Argentina by the rugged
Andean Mountain range reaching 7,500 mts, the North from
Peru by the Atacama Desert, the driest in the world. A 4,000
km long Pacific Ocean coast is located at the West and
towards the South is the Antartic region and the South
seas. It has very different
climates due to the longitude, being desertic in the North,
Mediterranean in the Centre, rain forest in the South,
Patagonic and Antartic in the far South. These facts make
Chile a rather unique place that behaves as a
biogeographical island, having an unusual endemic fauna,
phylogenetically related to Australasia.
ESPAÑOL: CHILE es una
larga y angosta faja de tierra, orientada en el eje Norte
Sur, entre las latitudes 17 y 56 Sur. Al Este se separa de
Argentina por la Cordillera de los Andes, alcanzando 7500
mts; Al Norte el Desierto de Atacama, el más seco del
mundo lo separa del Perú. Un océano
Pacífico de 4000 kms de largo lo limitan al Oeste y
al Sur están la Antártica y los mares del Sur.
Esto hace que Chile sea una isla biogeográfica, y que
su flora y fauna sea única. Tiene climas variados
debido a su longitud, siendo desértico al Norte,
Mediterráneo al Centro, y lluvioso hacia el
Sur.
